Natural Remedies For Constipation

Constipation has become a common issue in the past few years with a drastic increase in the number of people suffering from it. With more than 20 percent of Americans suffering from this illness, the numbers are bound to increase due to the lifestyle, food habits, diseases, and medication.

Here are a few natural remedies for constipation which you can try to get relief from the discomfort-

Symptoms Of Constipation

The first primary indication of constipation is less than three bowel movements per week. Other characteristics like abdominal bloating and pain due to hard and dry stools are also not to be missed. These issues not only affect your physical health but also affect the mental health of a person. Some of the natural remedies for the disease are mentioned down below:-

Drink Lots Of Water

Dehydration is one of the major causes of constipation. Increase your water intake as it will help to start the bowel movement naturally.  Carbonated drinks are often found to be useful for easy bowel movement, but one should always try to avoid sugary beverages as far as possible. Natural remedies may not be the solution for all our issues, but a simple remedy as such can be easily experimented with as it doesn’t also have any risk of side effects.

Practice Yoga or Exercise

Learning a few poses of yoga or a simple exercise can affect a person’s body significantly. Not only will it change the bowel moments, but it will also help you to remain in shape while improving your mental health.

Increase Intake Of Soluble Fibers

Fiber intake is known for making the bowel movements better. The fibers absorb the water quickly and help to increase the mass and are hence advised by doctors during constipation. The fibers are also of two types – soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibers can be found in pulses, beans, peas, and lentils, while the insoluble fibers can be found in wheat and vegetables. It is always recommended to go with the soluble ones and avoid the difficult ones during the phase.

Eat Probiotic Foods

Probiotic foods increase the good bacteria in the body. It is generally believed that the lack of good bacteria can be a reason for constipation and are hence advised by doctors. Foods like yogurt contain the probiotics and should be a part of your regular meal. Additionally, one can also take probiotics as a supplement. There are products readily available that add probiotics into our body.

Eat Prunes

Prunes are naturally acknowledged as the remedy for constipation. These substances are natural remedies and are readily available. Studies show that prune is more effective than soluble fibers as well. So, if someone is constipated, the easiest solution is to have prune juice. It can provide immediate relief and may help in the long run.

Avoid Dairy Products

The dairy products are fermented and hence contain large amounts of bacteria. As one grows up, the enzymes causing digestion of milk and milk products get gradually destroyed. So, too much intake of dairy products may cause constipation. You can also try replacing dairy products with calcium-rich foods.

Constipation may sound like a common ailment which can be easily cured, but it is in fact a huge problem among the senior citizens. It can cause a lot of pain and may lead to mental issues as well. While professionals advice a few natural remedies, it is recommended to consult a doctor if the situation becomes painful and the above-mentioned remedies don’t work.
